Short Answer Prompt

To help jumpstart your brainstorming and to demonstrate that we empathize with the challenges you face in applying to college, our staff has published their own responses to our supplemental short-answer prompts. We hope you'll enjoy learning a bit about us and will feel more comfortable showcasing something new about yourself. Remember, these are optional, and you are asked to submit only one.

Prompt #1 (Max 250 words or 2-Minute Video)

250 words or less or max 2-minute video: Please describe an aspect of your life outside of school that is important to you, such as an extracurricular activity, 一份工作, or a family responsibility. How has your involvement shaped your personal qualities and growth, and how has it impacted those around you?

I figure, since I bring it up in every W&L Informal Session I give, I might as well let it be the answer to the prompt about what is important to me outside of work: I play Ultimate Frisbee. It’s a hobby I picked up in 2021 at the previous school where I worked and have somehow weaseled into my job here, serving as the staff advisor for W&L’s club team.

What’s that you ask, am I any good? 不是真正的! But I’m better than I was, and that’s enough.

What I find interesting is there’s really nowhere else in my life I’d be content with that. I’m very competitive, and, frankly, I’m a bad sport! In high school and college, when I lose in debate, the judge didn’t understand my contentions (which he clearly didn’t). When I lose a board game, my friends teamed up against me (which they totally do). When I lose in trivia, the theme was dumb (which it undeniably was). Yet somehow, I’m totally agnostic about losing in Ultimate. Maybe it’s because in a physical competition, nothing is outside my control (other than giving up six inches to some of the guys I play against I guess, but believe me, I came to terms with being 5’10” long ago). Whatever the reason, I’m not sure it matters. 在球场上, I don’t mourn failure; I celebrate successes – whether it’s a newbie on my team scoring their first point, or a regular on theirs beating me deep (for the third time). I’m just there for the fun, the challenge, and the camaraderie. Simply put, I like the me who plays Ultimate!
